"One was a fairy flower from heaven, the other a flawless piece of jade..."
Widely regarded as the pinnacle of classical Chinese literature, "A Dream of the Red Mansions"has had a profound influence both in China and around the world. Translated into many languages, the novel has captivated global readers, offering a vivid window into traditional Chinese culture—its rituals, fashion, cuisine, poetry, and beyond.
Today, "A Dream of the Red Mansions" continues to serve as a cultural bridge between China and the world, sharing the timeless beauty of Chinese literature and art. And in Nanjing, at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain, within the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the imperial Xiaoling Mausoleum, lies a garden that brings this literary masterpiece to life—the Art World of the Red Mansion. More than a stunning example of Jiangnan-style landscape design, it is a living tribute to one of China's most treasured novels.
Cao Xueqin, the novel's author, had deep ties to Nanjing. His grandfather, Cao Yin, once oversaw the Jiangning Imperial Silk Manufacturing Bureau. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), Emperor Kangxi visited the Cao family residence four times on his southern inspection tours. This historical connection is one of the reasons why Nanjing was chosen as the site for this garden. Now that the city has also been designated a "World City of Literature" by UNESCO, this garden forms a shining chapter in Nanjing's literary legacy. It's as if the garden echoes the young Cao Xueqin's memories of old Jinling, the ancient name for Nanjing, adding a uniquely literary charm to the landscapes of the Zhongshan Mountain.
Built in the spirit of classical Jiangnan gardens—celebrated for their seamless harmony between artifice and nature—the Art World of the Red Mansion blends traditional craftsmanship with literary imagination. Designed as both a scenic retreat and a themed memorial to the novel, the garden is divided into 11 immersive settings inspired by iconic scenes from the book. These include: "Land of Illusion," "Realm of Hibiscus Fairies," "Xiaoxiang Bamboo Grove," "Snowy Gatheringof Poets," "Path of Petals and Shadows," "Enchanted Herb Garden,""Floral Cottage," "Qinfang Fishing Pavilion," "Hill of Falling Petals," "Begonia Poetry Club," and "Peony Pavilion." Each section captures the poetic spirit of Red Mansions, brought to life through unique artistic expressions. With the changing seasons, the garden transforms—ever graceful, ever enchanting.
The phrase "Twelve Beauties of Jinling" forever links Nanjing (formerly Jinling) to the world of "A Dream of Red Mansions."Walking through the garden, you'll encounter soft pink walls, dark gray tiles, and elegant, curved rooftops. Every architectural detail is exquisitely crafted. The garden employs classic landscaping techniques—borrowed views, hidden perspectives, framed vistas—to create a delicate interplay of nature and artistry. As you wander the winding paths, each turn reveals a new scene, like stepping into a living Chinese ink painting.
Pass under the misty archway of the "Land of Illusion,"and it feels as if you've entered a dream. At "Qinfang Gate," petals float gently on the water, recalling the romantic scene of Baoyu and Daiyu reading in the Western Chamber. In the "Xiaoxiang Pavilion," swaying bamboo whispers like Daiyu's gentle sighs. And at "Daoxiang Village," the rustic beauty reflects the quiet life of Li Wan.In this garden, the characters and stories of the novel seem to come alive.
