Located on the southern side of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Square, the Open-Air Music Hall was jointly funded by overseas Chinese in San Francisco and the Liaoning provincial government, at a cost of 95,000 yuan. Designed by renowned architects Guan Songsheng and Yang Tingbao, the complex covers an area of about 4,200 square meters. Construction began in the autumn of 1932 and was completed in August 1933. As an auxiliary structure of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the Open-Air Music Hall was primarily used for musical performances and public speeches during memorial ceremonies honoring Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

The Open-Air Music Hall is constructed of reinforced concrete and laid out in a fan-shaped plan, with the stage positioned at its center. Behind the stage stands a large sound-reflecting screen, measuring 11.3 meters in height and 16.7 meters in width, designed to gather and project sound. The top of the screen is carved with coiling dragon motifs, while three stone dragon heads below release streams of water through concealed pipes. The water flows into a lotus pond in front of the stage, creating an artificial fountain. Tiered seating spreads across the fan-shaped area, offering visitors places to rest. The outer edge of the Open-Air Music Hall sits on slightly higher ground and is lined with a semicircular colonnade. Climbing plants such as wisteria grow along the trellis, and stone benches beneath provide shaded seating.

A large screen wall is constructed behind the stage, standing 10 meters high, to gather and project sound.

In its use of the natural landscape, spatial layout and architectural form, the Open-Air Music Hall draws inspiration from ancient Greek architecture. At the same time, details such as the sound screen and performance platform reflect elements of traditional Jiangnan garden design. This fusion of Eastern and Western styles creates a spacious, open atmosphere and achieves a seamless harmony between architecture and nature.
